High potential and gifted education

Some students learn quickly and demonstrate advanced skills in areas such as creativity, critical thinking, leadership, or sport. At our school, we identify and nurture these strengths.

We provide rich learning experiences, extension opportunities, and personalised support to ensure every advanced learner is challenged, engaged, and able to thrive.

Why choose us for your high potential or gifted child?

Recognising potential and developing talent

Our teachers find potential and nurture our students to be the best they can be.

Tailored lessons

Each student has different abilities. Teachers respond to each student’s ability by providing extra challenges and extension activities to keep learning exciting and engaging.

Rich opportunities and activities

Students can take part in opportunities to develop their talent in the arts, sport, leadership and more.

Opening doors to wider experiences

Our students can participate in a wide range of state-wide opportunities that aim to extend and enrich student potential.

What is high potential and gifted education?

High Potential and Gifted Education (HPGE) is how our school supports students with advanced learning needs.

We do this through:

Our high potential and gifted education opportunities

Our students engage with  HPGE education in the classroom, in our school, and across NSW.

In our classroom
Students engage in open-ended tasks, problem-solving challenges, and inquiry-based projects that promote deep understanding. Flexible grouping, goal setting, and personalised feedback help advanced learners extend their skills, while collaboration and reflection build confidence and leadership.
Across our school
At Mount Keira Demonstration School, we use the High Potential and Gifted Education (HPGE) framework to recognise and extend student strengths across all areas of learning. Opportunities to challenge and inspire learners are built into every stage of school life. Across the school, we foster a culture where curiosity, creativity and excellence are valued and every student is encouraged to achieve their personal best.
Across NSW
The NSW Department of Education supports high potential and gifted students through the High Potential and Gifted Education (HPGE) Policy. Schools are supported in identifying, developing and extending student talent across the intellectual, creative, social-emotional and physical domains. Enrichment opportunities, such as academic competitions, creative and performing arts programs, sports pathways, and leadership initiatives that connect them with peers across New South Wales are prioritised.
